By Zoila Palma: The U.S. Embassy in Trinidad and Tobago has issued a rare security alert, urging American citizens to avoid visiting U.S. government facilities on the islands through the Diwali holiday weekend.
The advisory, released Saturday, cited a “heightened state of alert” but did not specify the reason.
It comes as tensions escalate between the United States and Venezuela following a series of deadly U.S. military strikes in Caribbean waters targeting suspected drug traffickers.
Venezuela, located just a few miles from Trinidad, has been on edge after two local fishermen reportedly disappeared during a recent U.S. strike, sparking anger in coastal communities.
Trinidad and Tobago’s Minister of Homeland Security, Roger Alexander, told the Associated Press that the embassy alert was linked to “threats directed at American citizens” that may stem from ongoing regional tensions.
Since early September, at least six U.S. strikes in the Caribbean have killed 29 people, according to regional reports.
In the most recent incident, U.S. officials said the military targeted a boat suspected of carrying drugs, taking survivors into custody afterward.
