By Zoila Palma: A widespread internet outage linked to Amazon Web Services (AWS) disrupted access to some of the world’s most popular websites and apps on Monday, leaving millions of users unable to connect.
Platforms including Snapchat, Fortnite, Zoom, Duolingo, Slack, and even Amazon’s own Alexa experienced downtime as companies scrambled to restore services, Yahoo reports.
According to outage tracker Downdetector, more than 6.5 million problem reports were filed globally, affecting over 1,000 companies across industries from gaming and banking to e-commerce and home security.
The disruption began around 7:30 a.m., when users started reporting issues accessing multiple platforms.
AWS later confirmed that it was investigating “increased error rates and latencies for multiple AWS services.” The company identified a potential issue in its DynamoDB APIs in the US-EAST-1 region—one of its key data centers—and began implementing fixes shortly after. By late morning, AWS said it was seeing “significant signs of recovery,” though some queued requests continued to experience delays.
By early afternoon, AWS reported that the underlying cause—a Domain Name System (DNS) failure—had been fully mitigated, and most services were functioning normally again. DNS acts as the internet’s “phone book,” translating website names into numerical IP addresses; when it malfunctions, browsers and apps struggle to locate websites, resulting in widespread outages.
Experts say today’s incident underscores the fragility of modern digital infrastructure, where a single point of failure can ripple across the internet.
