By Breaking Belize News Staff (HP): The National Hurricane Center (NHC) in Miami is monitoring a tropical wave located just west of the Windward Islands over the eastern Caribbean Sea. As of Sunday night, October 19, 2025, the system has become slightly better organized, with showers and thunderstorms gaining strength.
According to the NHC, surface data show the disturbance, designated AL98, still lacks a closed circulation, meaning it’s not yet a tropical depression. The system is moving quickly westward at 20 to 25 miles per hour, which will likely limit its short-term development.
However, forecasters say environmental conditions will become more favorable by midweek, as the system slows down over the central Caribbean Sea. A tropical depression is likely to form during the middle to latter part of this week, with a high (70%) chance of development within seven days.
Regardless of formation, heavy rain and gusty winds are expected to continue over parts of the Windward and Leeward Islands through Monday morning, potentially affecting travel and small craft operations in the area.
Belizeans are advised to monitor the system closely as it moves westward across the Caribbean in the coming days. If current forecasts hold, the wave could bring increased moisture, rain, and gusty conditions to portions of Central America later this week.
