By Aaron Humes: Speculation continues to loom over a potential unification of Belize’s telecom sector as Prime Minister John Briceño dodged questions regarding whether Belize Telemedia Limited (BTL) is in talks to acquire Speednet Communications.
During the opening today of BTL’s Signature Plus Store at the company headquarters at St Thomas Street, reporters seized the opportunity to inquire about the persistent rumors that have circulated since July that BTL was looking to buy out Speednet, a move that could dramatically reshape the telecommunications landscape in Belize.
When pressed for details, Prime Minister Briceño maintained a stance of discretion. “I think you need to talk to other people about that,” he replied when asked point-blank whether the acquisition deal was still alive. He suggested that reporters should contact his brother Jaime, who is affiliated with Speednet.
Despite the prompt, Briceño’s remarks were met with skepticism. “But he is your brother,” one reporter noted, attempting to draw a clearer line on the familial connections involved in the situation.
The Prime Minister remained firm, stating, “I am not going to go into a banter with you,” and reiterated, “No, I don’t have to answer it.”
Later he dodged a similar question about a valuation of Speednet before such an acquisition, perhaps conducted by NERA Consulting, which did the valuation for BTL when it was reacquired by the Government in 2019.
