By Zoila Palma: U.S. retailers are preparing for potential price hikes and supply disruptions after President Donald Trump announced plans to impose an additional 100% tariff on Chinese imports starting November 1.
The move, coming just weeks before the holiday shopping season, has sparked concern among trade experts who warn it could squeeze consumer demand and drive up costs for everything from clothing to electronics, Reuters report.
Analysts say the timing could dampen consumer sentiment, particularly for lower-income households already facing inflationary pressures.
Retailers may attempt to rush shipments ahead of the deadline to avoid the new duties, but experts caution that accelerated imports could still be hit with tariffs upon arrival. “This will have ripple effects throughout the supply chain,” said Blake Harden, managing director at Washington Council EY.
While most holiday inventory has already reached U.S. shores, analysts expect price increases and supply strain to emerge early next year if tensions persist.
Retail stocks, including Nike, Best Buy, and Abercrombie, dipped following Trump’s announcement, underscoring investor unease.
The renewed tariff threat adds volatility to an already uncertain retail landscape.
While some companies like Walmart and Macy’s have raised their outlooks, others—including toymaker Mattel—have cut forecasts amid the unpredictable trade environment.
