By Horace Palacio: Belizeans are feeling the squeeze like never before. From the grocery store to the gas station, prices keep climbing while wages struggle to keep up. A recent report from the Statistical Institute of Belize showed that consumer prices rose by 2.2 percent over the past year, driven mainly by food and transport costs. Items like watermelon went up by more than 30 percent, and many households now spend a larger share of their income on basic necessities. With a single person’s monthly expenses averaging around BZ$1,634 excluding rent, the cost of living has become a national concern.

The government has the power to ease this burden, but it must act decisively and smartly. The first step is tackling food costs. Belize imports much of what it eats, which makes the country vulnerable to global price shocks. The solution lies in strengthening local agriculture. Investing in small-scale farmers, better irrigation, and food storage systems can reduce dependency on imports and stabilize prices. When Belize produces more of its own food, it keeps money circulating locally and shields families from foreign inflation.

Another major factor is transportation. Rising fuel costs push up the price of everything else. The government could introduce targeted fuel relief for public transport operators and rural communities that rely on longer travel distances. At the same time, improving road conditions and investing in reliable, affordable public transportation would reduce long-term costs for everyone. When goods move faster and cheaper across the country, prices in the marketplace drop naturally.

Import duties are another area ripe for reform. By temporarily lowering or removing taxes on essential foods, medicines, and raw materials, the government can help reduce prices without heavy bureaucracy. Although this reduces short-term revenue, it puts more money into the pockets of working Belizeans who need it most, and that spending, in turn, fuels the economy.

Social protection programs are also essential. Conditional cash transfers or food assistance can help the most vulnerable families weather the worst effects of inflation. These measures not only protect citizens but also strengthen the country’s social fabric and economic stability. Alongside that, strict monitoring of retail markups can help prevent unfair price gouging.

Long-term solutions will require deeper economic transformation. Belize must invest in renewable energy and energy-efficient systems to lower electricity and fuel bills. The country can also work with regional partners to buy food and fuel in bulk, negotiating better prices for citizens. Most importantly, policymakers must focus on building a competitive economy by breaking monopolies and promoting transparency in supply chains.
Reducing the cost of living will not happen overnight, but the roadmap is clear. It begins with smart subsidies, strong support for local food production, better transport systems, and fiscal discipline. Belizeans deserve a future where a paycheck can stretch further and where the cost of a decent life isn’t out of reach.

If the government listens to data, targets its policies wisely, and commits to long-term reforms, Belize can turn the tide on rising living costs. It’s time to move from talk to action, because every dollar saved at the market, the pump, or the utility meter makes a real difference in the lives of ordinary Belizeans.
