By Breaking Belize News Staff (HP): The Belize Police Department is mourning one of their own after Police Constable Oswald “Ozzie” Young was fatally shot in Unitedville late Friday night.
Police say Young, who was in uniform at the time, was transported to the hospital but succumbed to his injuries shortly after. The motive behind the attack remains unknown, and investigators are pursuing leads.
Constable Young’s name had appeared in headlines before. In 2014, the officer was on interdiction after being charged with armed robbery and later faced an additional drug trafficking charge. Police reports at the time stated that Young was found with 189 grams of cannabis during a raid. The robbery charge stemmed from a 2012 armed hold-up at the Toledo Teacher’s Credit Union, where over $34,000 was stolen.
Despite his troubled past, Young’s killing has left many in his community and the police department in disbelief. Authorities are working to determine whether his past legal troubles played a role in his death.
An official police report is expected soon as investigations continue.
