By Breaking Belize News Staff: Five young men accused of staging an armed robbery on the Belchina Bridge earlier this week were arraigned on Thursday afternoon at the Belize City Magistrate’s Court. The men, four of whom are well known to police, were jointly charged with robbery in connection with the theft of a $500 cellphone.

The accused are Shemaud Nunez, 24, a maintenance worker of Regent Street; Shemar Zuniga, 19, a production assistant of North Creek; Edward Saldano, 26, a laborer of M&M Street; Rudolph Gibson, 22, a sales clerk of Far West Street; and Devon Garcia, 20, a warehouse attendant of West Street.

During the arraignment before a Senior Magistrate in Court #3, Zuniga pleaded guilty to the charge, while his co-accused all pleaded not guilty. Sentencing for Zuniga has been deferred to October 17, 2025, when the court is expected to hear from character witnesses before imposing a sentence.

Due to the seriousness of the offense — which involved the use of a firearm — bail was denied for all five defendants. They were remanded to the Belize Central Prison pending further proceedings.

According to police, the incident occurred around 12:54 a.m. on Monday, October 6, 2025. The victim reported that he was walking on Belchina Bridge when a Chevy Equinox pulled up and five men exited, robbing him at gunpoint of his cellphone. A swift police response led to the interception of the suspected vehicle near Lindo’s Alley, where officers reportedly recovered the stolen phone.

Several of the accused are no strangers to the law. Edward Saldano previously faced a firearm-related charge and was reportedly shot by police earlier this year at the Michael Finnegan Market. Meanwhile, Gibson had previously been charged for the 2023 robbery of two tourists but was freed in May 2025 when the case was dismissed for lack of prosecution.

As the group was escorted to the prison van after court, Shemaud Nunez shouted to relatives gathered outside, using foul language at reporters.

All five men are expected back in court later this month.
