By Zoila Palma:  American soybean farmers are facing mounting financial pressure as the ongoing trade dispute with China continues to limit access to one of their largest export markets, Fox reports.

China, which typically imports more than 60% of the world’s traded soybean supply, halted purchases of U.S. soybeans earlier this year in response to tariffs imposed by the Trump administration. The move has forced China to seek alternative suppliers, primarily in Brazil and Argentina, disrupting long-standing trade relationships and leaving U.S. producers struggling to find new buyers.

According to the American Soybean Association (ASA), the U.S. historically exported nearly 28% of its soybean crop to China before the trade war began in 2018.

That figure dropped to just 11% during the 2018–2019 crop year before briefly rebounding during the pandemic. However, exports have since fallen again, reaching only 22% in the 2023–2024 season. Farmers warn that losing consistent access to the Chinese market could have lasting impacts on their financial stability and the broader agricultural economy.

Experts warn that the ongoing trade rift could have long-term consequences for the U.S. agricultural sector, as South American producers continue to expand their market share.
