By Aaron Humes: If the George Price truism continues to hold that elections are won on Election Day, turnout will mostly decide today’s referendum on the island of Caye Caulker.
According to Councilor Ilya Rosado, he is aware that he faces an uphill battle to convince a majority of his fellow 1,454 registered voting residents to come out, never mind vote yes.
On Monday, he responded to a question on how he will “outmaneuver” his rivals by acknowledging he will need to be strategic, but also that it will be tough: “I have a plan in place, and I do have a budget that I received from local businesses, and I know I have support, but the thing is that there has been so much stigma that these people don’t want to be mentioned; these people don’t want to say they support me. I’m at the point where I feel saddened by that fact, that it has become so divisive, on what I see as something logical…”
Rosado promised to be present at the voting site all day and “whether it’s yes or no, what really matters is that I do my best to educate them.” He added that he has been having one-on-one conversations with residents, often out of earshot of those who disapprove. He encouraged residents to come out early and cast their vote without fear. “I started this, I’ll see it through to the end…”
He noted that the initial petition was signed by more than 500 residents, some of whom have since changed their minds, but he estimates that about 1 of every 12 voters have been outright dismissive, but most want more information and he feels he can sway them to his side.
As for his standing on the Caye Caulker Village Council, Rosado says he will serve out his term to which he was elected earlier this year and continue community service.
