By Breaking Belize News Staff (HP): Police and BDF bomb experts are investigating a deadly explosion that claimed the life of 25-year-old welder Jose Valencia on Saturday afternoon in San Jose Palmar Village, Orange Walk District.

Initial reports indicate that Valencia was welding a metal object believed to be an old military training bomb when it detonated, killing him instantly. The blast, described by residents as thunderous, was heard across a one-mile radius and shattered windows in nearby homes.

Investigators say Valencia had been contracted by former PUP area representative Dave Burgos to install the object as a decorative piece on his property. Burgos told police he had obtained three old bombs from a man in Carmelita Village, believing they were harmless relics.

Following the explosion, the BDF Bomb Squad arrived at the scene and safely secured two additional similar devices. Authorities believe the explosive may have originated from decades-old British military ordnance left behind in the Crooked Tree Pine Ridge area, once used as a live-fire training range.

Police are urging the public to report any suspected explosive materials immediately and not to handle or move them. The investigation continues into how such an old device remained live for so many years and whether other unexploded relics may still be present in northern Belize.
