By Horace Palacio: Let’s be real. Too many Belizeans enjoy seeing their own people fall. They laugh, gossip, and celebrate when a fellow Belizean struggles, instead of offering support or encouragement. That kind of attitude is poison. It is one of the biggest reasons we cannot move forward as a nation.
You hear it everywhere. Belize no good. This country backward. I done with this place. People talk like Belize is the problem, when the real problem is the mindset. It is the crab-in-a-bucket mentality that keeps us trapped. Instead of celebrating each other’s success, we criticize it. Instead of lifting up our brothers and sisters, we pull them down.
Belize is not perfect, but no country is. What makes a nation strong is its people, their pride, and their willingness to build. Love for your country is not something you just say. Love is action. It is choosing to support a Belizean business. It is keeping your community clean. It is speaking proudly about your home, not tearing it apart with negativity.
You do not need to be rich or powerful to make a difference. You just need to care. Every small act of pride and respect for Belize counts. Teach a skill. Help a child. Support a neighbor. Defend your country when others disrespect it.
And if you truly believe that another country is better, then go. Pack your bags and go live where your heart feels happy. But do not stay here dragging down the same country that raised you, fed you, and gave you its blessings. That is not patriotism. That is hypocrisy.
Belize needs believers, not bashers. Builders, not destroyers. Dreamers, not doubters. We have beautiful land, rich culture, and warm-hearted people. Belize has given us peace, laughter, and identity. We owe it more than complaints.
If you love Belize, prove it. Stop cursing it. Stop comparing it. Start contributing to it. Be the change you want to see in your country. Talk less and do more.
Belize will never rise if its own people keep tearing it down. But it will shine brighter than ever if we start lifting each other up. So to every Belizean reading this, remember these four words that say it all:
Because those who love it will be the ones who change it.
