By Zoila Palma: Mexican authorities have seized a heavily armored “monster” truck equipped with gunports and a Browning .50-caliber machine gun capable of shooting down aircraft, The Hill reports.
The vehicle, a stolen Ford F-450 reinforced with welded steel plates, was discovered during a three-day security operation in the mountainous region of western Chihuahua — an area long plagued by violent clashes between the Sinaloa cartel and La Línea, the armed wing of the former Juárez cartel.
State police located the truck while conducting aerial surveillance using a Bell 429 helicopter, uncovering six suspected cartel camps and more than 410,000 marijuana plants near the towns of Guerrero, Madera, and Las Tinajas.
“Its presence alone represents a threat and a danger for the surrounding communities,” said Chihuahua State Police Chief of Staff Luis Aguirre, describing the weapon’s ability to penetrate military armor and down aircraft. The armored vehicle was escorted to a nearby city under tight security involving multiple police cars and a drone.
While no arrests were made, authorities believe the vehicle was used in recent cartel confrontations.
Public Safety Director Gilberto Loya said police have discovered 45 such armored vehicles in the past four years and dismantled several workshops used to build them.
Officials also warned of an escalating threat from cartel-operated drones dropping explosives on rivals and security forces.
“We are eliminating this threat and possible attacks that could bring a catastrophic scenario,” Aguirre said, reaffirming the state’s commitment to strengthening public safety.
