By Breaking Belize News Staff: A 17-year-old minor has pleaded guilty to a firearm charge after police discovered a revolver in a Burrell Boom residence earlier this week. Despite the guilty plea, his co-accused, 26-year-old construction worker Gilbert Utterman Guzman, remains behind bars as the charge against him was not withdrawn.
The duo was arraigned in the Belize City Magistrate’s Court for kept unlicensed firearm, after police recovered a silver .22 revolver marked “MOD-1960-CAL .22 Made in Italy” during a search on September 30.
In court, the minor admitted ownership of the weapon, reportedly telling officers at the scene, “Dah feh me.” His plea was accepted, but Magistrate Mannon Dennison deferred sentencing until November 6 to allow the Community Rehabilitation Department to prepare a report before handing down a suitable penalty.
Ordinarily, when one defendant accepts responsibility in firearm cases, charges against others are withdrawn. However, after consulting with superiors, the prosecution decided to maintain the charge against Guzman. As a result, he has been remanded to the Belize Central Prison until November 6, the same date set for the minor’s sentencing.
The firearm was found inside a two-story room in Burrell Boom during a police operation linked to a burglary investigation. Neither accused was able to produce a gun license.
