By Zoila Palma: Today, Hamas said that it is prepared to release all remaining Israeli hostages but called for further negotiations on key elements of the U.S.-backed Gaza peace plan.
In a statement, the group said it agreed to an exchange formula outlined in President Donald Trump’s proposal, but emphasized that issues concerning the future of Gaza and Palestinian rights were still under discussion.
The announcement came just hours after Trump warned Hamas to accept the plan by Sunday or face severe consequences, writing on Truth Social that he believed the group was “ready for a lasting peace.”
Hamas political adviser Tahir al-Nounou told the BBC that it was prepared to negotiate immediately on a prisoner swap, an end to the war, and the withdrawal of Israeli forces. However, the statement made no reference to one of Washington’s central demands — that Hamas disarm and step aside from governing Gaza.
Under the U.S. plan, hostages would be released within 72 hours in exchange for hundreds of Palestinian detainees, while humanitarian aid would flow into Gaza. Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu jointly announced the proposal earlier this week, but Netanyahu reaffirmed his opposition to a Palestinian state shortly after.
Hamas said discussions on Gaza’s future would continue within a broader “national framework,” while fighting in Gaza intensified, leaving dozens more dead in the past 24 hours.
