Only Belize-based coach with USA Basketball accreditation continues to lead by example

By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Roscoe Anderson Rhys has once again made Belizean basketball history, earning his USA Basketball Gold Coach License for the ninth consecutive year—an achievement that reflects his unwavering commitment to coaching excellence and youth development.
“9 years officially Licensed with USA Basketball coaching education is something I take very seriously,” said Rhys, who remains the only Belize-based coach accredited by USA Basketball.
Rhys currently holds a USA Basketball Gold Coach License, which grants him access to elite coaching resources, national networking opportunities, and the ability to lead junior teams in U.S. tournaments. His name is listed in the USA Basketball national database of licensed coaches, making him visible to players, parents, and organizations across the United States.
In its 2025 letter of accreditation, USA Basketball praised Rhys’s dedication.
“Thank you for joining our coaching community and committing to creating safe, fun, and developmentally appropriate environments for youth participants, while inspiring them to reach their potential through basketball,” USA Basketball said.
“USA Basketball is excited to welcome you into our coaching community, and we thank you for your commitment to youth development.”
Licensed annually since 2017, Rhys renews his credentials each year by completing refresher courses.
“This license allows me to take junior teams to play in tournaments in the USA,” he previously told Breaking Belize News. “It opens up opportunities for me to attend coaching clinics through USA Basketball and meet coaches from the NBA, the NCAA, and top high school programs in the USA.”

Over the years, Rhys has taken several youth teams from Belize to compete in summer tournaments in the United States, giving young Belizean players exposure to high-level competition and international development pathways.
Rhys’s coaching footprint spans every level of the sport in Belize. He works with primary school athletes at Belize Elementary School, high school players at Belize High School, junior college teams, and semi-professional squads, previously coaching the Orange Walk Running Rebels in the Belize Elite Basketball League. He also serves as a National Team Coach with the Belize Basketball Federation, guiding junior national teams at the U15 and U18 levels. Beyond formal competition, he runs the Rhys Skills Academy, a grassroots initiative focused on player development and mentorship.
In addition to his basketball credentials, Rhys is also a certified Level 1 volleyball instructor recognized by the Fédération Internationale de Volleyball (FIVB), further demonstrating his versatility and commitment to youth sports development in Belize.
With nine years of USA Basketball accreditation under his belt, Rhys continues to set the gold standard for coaching in Belize. His dedication, professionalism, and passion for youth development make him a beacon for aspiring coaches and players alike.
