By Zoila Palma: Venezuela’s Defense Minister, General Vladimir Padrino, announced Thursday that five U.S. combat aircraft were detected near the country’s Caribbean coast, calling the move a direct provocation and threat to national security, Reuters report.
Speaking from an air base on state television, Padrino said the aircraft were reported to a control tower by a commercial airline and described their presence as “a vulgarity, a provocation, a threat to the security of the nation.”
The United States has not issued an immediate response, but Washington has maintained an active military presence in the Caribbean, citing efforts to combat drug trafficking.
U.S. forces have intercepted several boats it claimed were transporting drugs from Venezuela, actions that have drawn criticism from some international experts who question the legality of the strikes.
