By Breaking Belize News Staff: The long-delayed triple murder trial of 40-year-old Elmer Nah saw another adjournment on Wednesday after his attorney requested time for him to seek medical treatment for an eye injury allegedly sustained while on remand at the Belize Central Prison.
Nah’s attorney, Dr. Lynden Jones, told Justice Nigel Pilgrim that his client informed him this morning that he is experiencing complications with his left eye after being pepper sprayed at the prison about a week ago. Nah claims the incident occurred after he witnessed security personnel beating another inmate and spoke out. He further alleged that rust from the prison cell door mixed with the pepper spray and got into his eye, causing damage. According to Jones, Nah did not receive medical care until the following day, leaving him with lasting complications.
Justice Pilgrim granted the one-day adjournment, noting that the court’s duty is to ensure a fair trial and that the accused has the right to properly follow his case both orally and visually. The matter is set to continue tomorrow at 2:00 p.m.
The last court session in the case was held on June 27, 2025. The Crown, represented by lead prosecutor Terrence Williams and attorney Walter Membreño, still has five live witnesses to call, including police officer Jerome Middleton, who had begun his testimony in June, as well as police IT personnel Cpl. Elias Jimenez, and virtual testimonies expected from an FBI representative and lead investigator Sgt. Cassandra O’Brien next week.
The Crown indicated they may close their case by next week, after which the defense will present its arguments in the voir dire.
