By Zoila Palma: The U.S. federal government shut down at midnight after Congress failed to reach an agreement on funding, with Republicans and Democrats deadlocked over enhanced Obamacare subsidies.
Senators are leaving town until Friday, meaning the shutdown is expected to last at least several days, CNN reports.
Thousands of federal employees have been furloughed, while essential workers, including air traffic controllers and TSA staff, remain on duty without pay.
The shutdown has sparked immediate concern from lawmakers and federal workers.
White House budget chief Russ Vought warned that permanent layoffs could begin within one to two days, while programs like WIC risk running out of funds.
New York senators slammed the Trump administration for freezing billions in federal funding for infrastructure projects, calling the move “spiteful and political” and criticizing the use of working families as “pawns.”
Major government departments are adjusting operations under contingency plans.
The Department of Labor will continue unemployment benefits, Health and Human Services will maintain Social Security and Medicare payments, and the Department of Defense will prioritize border security and overseas operations.
Meanwhile, economic reporting from the Department of Commerce is suspended, and some national parks will operate with limited access.
