By Breaking Belize News Staff: The case of a Nicaraguan doctor accused of secretly spiking his colleague’s drink during a social outing is moving forward to trial before the Chief Magistrate’s Court.
On Tuesday, the Case Management Conference (CMC) for Dr. Carlos Alberto Saborio Coze, 50, concluded before Chief Magistrate Deborah Rogers in Court #1. The brief session, which wrapped up by 11:35 a.m., saw both prosecution and defense review the depositions of key witnesses.
Dr. Coze is accused of administering an obnoxious substance to his longtime friend and fellow medical professional, a Venezuelan nurse during a night out at Little John’s Corner in Belize City on November 30, 2024. According to police reports, the nurse left his drink unattended to use the restroom and later blacked out after resuming consumption. He reported the matter to police on December 4, 2024.
Surveillance footage allegedly shows Dr. Coze pouring an unknown substance into the nurse’s glass while he was away. However, no evidence of sexual assault was found following medical examination, and searches of Dr. Coze’s home and hospital locker turned up nothing incriminating.
Defense attorney Richard “Dickie” Bradley indicated that the trial will begin tomorrow, Wednesday, October 1, 2025, with a voir dire—a trial within a trial—focused on whether certain evidence was properly obtained by police. “The matter will kick off tomorrow in a voir dire because we are challenging how certain information was obtained,” Bradley told the court.
The prosecution is expected to call its main witness, Brito-Nava, as well as two police officers, including one who submitted a DVD of the alleged incident and an IT technician involved in the case.
Dr. Coze remains out on bail pending trial. Proceedings are set to begin tomorrow at 9 a.m. in Court #1.
