By Aaron Humes: Another spree of crime in the last five days prompted concerns that Belize City’s Southside would go under a State of Emergency for the second time this year, after one was in place from May to June.
But on Monday, Acting Commissioner of Police Bart Jones says it is not up to Police: “Well, the issue of SOE, while many may think that it is from the department, the department does not do SOE proclamations and so we will we will continue to do what we are doing.”
He added that after speaking with his division commanders and Andrew Dawson of the Leadership Intervention Unit (LIU), “I am probably of the view that we are not there yet in terms of an SOE, so we will try to see what we can do to address the situation.”
But after a derailment of the trend when murders were proceeding to another record low, whose fault is it? Jones allowed that repeat flare-ups of gang violence are to blame, but that while he takes personal responsibility as acting head of the Department, it is a Department-wide failure: “While majority are gang related, there are there are a number of those that are, are not connected with, or so far the the information is not connected with the gang activity, but the gang activities, of course, accounts for majority of the incidents….it may very well be, despite who is in the seat that these things would have occurred. And so we have not, we have not shifted from any operational focus that we have done, even before Doctor Rosado took the seat. So, we’ve not changed in terms of our operation. So these things do in fact happen, despite whosoever is in the seat. It is okay. I take responsibility because I am the acting commissioner. Just. No, but certainly it is not one that I see well attributed to me personally.”
