By Zoila Palma: Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro has signed a decree granting him expanded security powers in the event of a foreign military intervention, Vice President Delcy Rodríguez announced on Monday, Reuters report.
The decree authorizes the mobilization of armed forces nationwide and gives the military temporary control over public services and the country’s vital oil industry. Under Venezuela’s constitution, the powers would be valid for 90 days, with the possibility of a 90-day extension.
The move follows the deployment of a U.S. naval fleet in the Caribbean, which Washington insists is aimed at combating drug trafficking. Caracas, however, accuses the United States of plotting to oust Maduro from power.
In recent weeks, U.S. forces have intercepted several boats allegedly carrying narcotics from Venezuela, sparking questions over the legality of the operations after deadly clashes at sea.
Rodríguez condemned U.S. actions during a meeting with diplomats, calling them a direct threat.
