Press Release

The Government of Belize, through the Ministry of Sustainable Development, Climate Change and Solid Waste Management, in partnership with the Department of Youth Service and United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) Belize, hosted the National Youth Consultation to inform Belize’s Climate Landscape Analysis for Children and Youth (CLAC+) Report. This event, led by the youth for the youth, brought together over 90 young people from across the country, with sessions facilitated by young leaders from the Climate 501 Academy.

The CLAC+ report assesses how climate change, environment, energy, and disasters affect children and youth. It identifies gaps in policies, programming, and financing, and provides recommendations for government (national and municipal/local), civil society organizations, and development partners to better safeguard children’s rights and secure a sustainable future. The report emphasizes children and youth as a distinct group with unique vulnerabilities and capacities, while also considering the needs of pregnant and lactating women, persons with disabilities, and Indigenous Peoples.

During the consultation, young people shared how climate change and environmental degradation impact their daily lives, education, health, and livelihoods. They highlighted actions they are already taking or are willing to take to adapt and contribute to sustainability. The youth also voiced their desire for greater involvement in decision-making on climate change, resilience-building initiatives, and climate action projects.

The preparation of the CLAC+ will continue with additional stakeholder engagement sessions, ensuring the perspectives of environmental youth groups and other vulnerable children and youths across Belize are meaningfully included.
