By Breaking Belize News Staff: A Belize City maintenance worker was convicted of drug charges on Monday after being caught with over 100 grams of cannabis.
He is 26-year-old Edwin Gilbert Shepherd of Pickstock Street, who pleaded guilty to possession of a controlled drug with intent to supply 112.1 grams of cannabis.
The incident occurred on Sunday, September 28, when police on patrol stopped Shepherd on Victoria Street. A search revealed a bulky object in his pocket, which turned out to be cannabis.
In court, Shepherd admitted the drugs were his, saying he got caught up trying to “make some papers” but now realized “this is not the road for me.”
Magistrate Mannon Dennison fined him $4,005, far less than the mandatory minimum of $10,000 or three years in prison that could have been imposed. As a first-time offender with no previous drug convictions, he was spared jail.
Shepherd has until March 31, 2026, to pay the fine or face one year of imprisonment in default.
