By Breaking Belize News Staff (HP): Two systems are active in the Atlantic this morning, Tropical Storm Imelda and Hurricane Humberto, but the National Meteorological Service confirms that neither poses any threat to Belize.
At 3:00 a.m., Tropical Storm Imelda was centered near latitude 25.5N, longitude 77.1W, or about 60 miles south of the Great Abaco Islands in The Bahamas. Imelda is moving north at 8 mph with maximum sustained winds of 45 mph. The storm is expected to continue tracking northward, gradually intensifying as it interacts with warm waters near the Bahamas and the western Atlantic.
Meanwhile, Hurricane Humberto has maintained its strength as a Category 4 hurricane. At 3:00 a.m., it was located near latitude 27.2N, longitude 66.9W, or about 375 miles south-southwest of Bermuda. Humberto is moving northwest at 14 mph and is packing maximum sustained winds of 130 mph, making it a powerful storm. Forecast models suggest Humberto will remain over open waters, posing a threat to Bermuda but no danger to Belize or the western Caribbean.
The National Meteorological Service reminds Belizeans that while these systems are not a threat, the Atlantic hurricane season remains active until November 30. Residents are advised to stay informed and prepared, as conditions can change quickly.
