By Aaron Humes: A family lost their home and two vehicles to a destructive fire early this morning, Saturday. The blaze broke out at approximately 12:45 a.m. at a two-storey wooden residence located at Racecourse Street.
Police say 64-year-old Harrieth Smith, who lived in the upper flat of the house, was awakened around 12:15 a.m. by what she described as an explosion. Upon investigating, she discovered that the lower flat was engulfed in flames. She was able to escape from the home without injury.
Firefighters arrived at the scene shortly after receiving the alarm, but despite their efforts, the blaze had already taken a significant toll. The fire completely gutted the home, which housed not only the living area but also precious belongings of the Smith family.
In addition to the destruction of the family residence, the fire claimed a white Toyota Camry valued at approximately $19,000 and severely damaged another vehicle parked outside.
Fortunately, no injuries were reported as a result of the incident. The cause of the fire remains under investigation as police and fire personnel work to gather more information.
