By Zoila Palma: Prime Minister John Briceño addressed the 80th Session of the United Nations General Assembly on Friday, emphasizing Belize’s record as a peaceful and welcoming nation while underscoring the urgent challenges posed by climate change.
“For forty-four years of independence, Belize has been a peaceful and welcoming nation. We have been a refuge—for those fleeing war and terror from countries near and far. Per capita, we have absorbed more immigrants than any other country in our region,” Briceño said.
He highlighted national progress in education, healthcare, jobs, and housing under Plan Belize 2.0, while stressing the government’s focus on sustainable development. “We have an ambitious energy transition plan that places Belize on track to surpass net zero through innovative financing that turns our forests and reefs into investments for conservation,” he stated.
Turning to the climate crisis, Briceño warned of its impact on Belize’s people and economy. “Belize is the fifth most vulnerable Small Island Developing State to climate risk, ranked second in the world for impacts from extreme weather,” he said.
Rising seas, extreme heat, unpredictable rainfall, and declining fish stocks, he added, are already displacing communities and threatening food security.
“This is our lived reality—it is not science fiction, it is not abstract theory, it is a danger to our overall security,” the Prime Minister told world leaders.
