By Zoila Palma: Today, Starbucks announced that it will cut 900 corporate jobs and close underperforming stores as part of a $1 billion restructuring plan aimed at reviving the struggling coffee chain, Yahoo reports.
In a letter to employees, CEO Brian Niccol said the layoffs, which affect non-retail roles, will be communicated on September 26, with severance and benefit extensions offered. The company will also scale back its store count in the U.S. and Canada by about 1% this fiscal year.
The move follows earlier layoffs of 1,100 employees and comes as Starbucks faces continued sales declines.
In its latest quarterly results, U.S. same-store sales fell 2% for the sixth straight quarter, driven by a 4% drop in customer transactions. Niccol said savings from the restructuring will be reinvested into frontline staffing, store renovations, and updated designs to restore the coffeehouse atmosphere, including more seating for customers.
Despite the closures, Starbucks plans to invest in 1,000 store upgrades over the next 12 months and launch a new prototype café in 2026 with drive-through service and reduced construction costs.
