By Zoila Palma:  While overall food and non-alcoholic beverage prices rose 1.6% in August 2025, data from the Statistical Institute of Belize (SIB) shows that several vegetable prices fell, offering some relief for consumers.

Prices of key vegetables saw notable declines, including lettuce, which dropped 10.7% from $6.49 to $5.80 per pound, corn (pack of 3) down 14.6% from $7.31 to $6.24, plantain falling 13.9% from $0.61 to $0.52 per unit, and okra decreasing 3.7% from $4.09 to $3.94 per pound.

Despite the drop in vegetables, overall food costs rose an average of 1.1% due to higher prices for cereal products such as bread and bakery items (up 2.2%) and fresh meats including pork, beef, and poultry (up 3.1%).

Non-alcoholic beverages also contributed to inflation, increasing 4.4% in August.
