Belize’s national cycling team is currently getting ready to compete in the 2025 UCI Road World Championships in Kigali, Rwanda, on Friday, September 26, and Sunday, September 28. The championships mark a major step for Belizean cycling with full representation across three competitive categories.
This year, Belize is proudly represented by:
- Keith Enwright Jr – Junior Category (119.3 km – 74.1 mi)
- Derrick Chavarria – Under-23 Category (164.4 km – 102.3 mi)
- Jyven Gonzalez – Elite Category (267.5 km – 166.2 mi)
Gonzalez, competing in the Elite division via Belize’s second wildcard invitation, is racing against the world’s top cyclists—including defending World Champion Tadej Pogačar of Slovenia, who claimed the rainbow jersey in 2024 with a 100-kilometre solo breakaway in Zürich. That victory completed Pogačar’s historic Triple Crown of Cycling—Giro d’Italia, Tour de France, and World Championships in a single season.

Kigali’s Global Stage
The Elite Men’s Road Race features 165 riders from 57 nations. The Kigali course is hilly and technical, favouring climbers and puncheurs—riders with explosive power and tactical finesse. Gonzalez is lining up alongside elite names like Remco Evenepoel (Belgium), 2023 champion Mathieu van der Poel (Netherlands), Julian Alaphilippe (France), and Tom Pidcock (Great Britain).
In the U23 category, Derrick Chavarria joins a stacked field that includes rising stars like Josh Tarling (Great Britain), Romain Grégoire (France), and Thibau Nys (Belgium)—all of whom have made headlines in European stage races and time trials. The 164.6 km course is expected to test endurance and climbing ability, offering Chavarria a chance to measure himself against the next generation of WorldTour talent.
Meanwhile, Keith Enwright Jr is competing in the Junior Men’s Road Race, a 119.3 km contest featuring standout riders like Michiel Mouris (Netherlands)—the reigning Junior Time Trial World Champion—and Ashlin Barry (USA), who finished second in the TT on Tuesday and is already signed to a top development team. Enwright’s participation fulfills a key requirement tied to Belize’s nomination for the 2026 Youth Olympic Games in Dakar, reinforcing the country’s commitment to youth development and Olympic readiness.
Leadership and Representation
Accompanying the athletes are CFB President Glen Flowers and General Secretary Leticia Westby, who are also attending the UCI Congress, where elections for the UCI Management Committee are underway. The CFB noted that Irene Baki, originally slated to travel with the delegation, was unable to attend due to administrative travel requirements.
“These representations are a signal of the development of our athletes as we work to become more competitive in our international representation,” said the CFB.

With active participation across all categories—Junior, U23, and Elite—Team Belize is gaining invaluable experience and visibility on the world stage. As the riders take on the roads of Kigali, they carry not only national pride but the hopes of a growing cycling community back home.
