By Zoila Palma: The campaign supporting the upcoming cannabis legalization referendum on Caye Caulker officially kicked off Monday, September 22, 2025. Led by local councilor Ilya Rosado, the initiative seeks to educate residents, provide clear information, and ensure that voters are well-prepared ahead of the historic October 8th vote.
Volunteers will engage the community through door-to-door visits, discussing the facts, potential benefits, and regulatory framework of a legal cannabis industry. In addition, the campaign will feature street activations and public conferences, offering residents the chance to hear directly from experts and local leaders and have their questions answered.
The two planned public conferences aim to foster open dialogue and transparency, with dates and locations to be shared via the campaign’s social media pages on Facebook and Instagram, @legalizeit.cayecaulker.
“This campaign is about education, transparency, and empowerment,” said Councilor Rosado. “We want our community to make their decision based on facts, not fear. Legalization could bring jobs, regulated access, and other positive changes to Caye Caulker.”
The referendum will ask voters whether the Government of Belize should establish a responsible, regulated, and taxable cannabis industry, with part of the revenue benefiting Caye Caulker and its residents.
Councilor Rosado emphasized civic participation, urging all registered voters on the island to take part on October 8. “This is our chance to shape the future of Caye Caulker together,” Rosado said.
