By Breaking Belize News Staff: As Belize celebrated its 44th Independence anniversary on September 21, 2025, a social media post from Melchor de Mencos, Petén stirred controversy with  its Independence Day greeting.

The page wrote: “Happy Independence Day Belize, what would we do without your money.”

The remark struck a sensitive chord as it came amid recent tensions between Belize and Guatemala, following confrontations at the Sarstoon involving the Guatemalan Armed Forces (GAF) and the Belize Defence Force (BDF).

Some Belizeans have since said they would limit cross-border shopping trips to Melchor in protest following the illegal hoisting of a Guatemalan flag on Sarstoon on September 10, 2025.

Commerce in Melchor has long relied heavily on Belizean customers, who frequently purchase clothing, uniforms, party supplies, medications, and even access medical services there.

While the post drew laughs from some, others viewed it as a reminder of the economic dependence of Petén on Belizean consumers.
