By Zoila Palma:  As Belize marked its 44th anniversary of independence on September 21, the government extended gratitude to countries and organizations around the world for their warm greetings.

Messages poured in from across the globe, including from Peru, Colombia, Costa Rica, the Dominican Republic, Cuba, the United States, the Commonwealth, India, Malaysia, Pakistan, Serbia, the Maldives, Saudi Arabia, Türkiye, Russia, and Ukraine.

Regional allies such as CARICOM also sent congratulatory notes, reaffirming their ties with Belize.

In its message, Cuba highlighted its “commitment to deepening the ties of friendship and cooperation that unite our nations,” while Ukraine praised Belize’s sovereignty and commitment to democracy.

Notably absent from the well-wishes was neighboring Guatemala, which maintains a territorial claim over Belize.

That claim is currently before the International Court of Justice (ICJ) for resolution.
