By Zoila Palma: Tens of thousands gathered at the State Farm Stadium in Phoenix, Arizona, on Sunday for a memorial service honoring conservative activist Charlie Kirk, who was shot dead on September 10.
US President Donald Trump headlined the five-hour event, calling Kirk a “great American hero” and “martyr for American freedom.”
According to BBC, Vice-President JD Vance, senior administration officials, and figures from Kirk’s organization Turning Point USA also spoke, portraying the 31-year-old as a historic figure in the conservative movement.
The most emotional moment came from Kirk’s wife, Erika, who has been named the new CEO of Turning Point USA.
In a tearful address, she said she forgave her husband’s alleged killer, 22-year-old Tyler Robinson, citing her Christian faith and her husband’s mission to reach young people. “My husband, Charlie, he wanted to save young men, just like the one who took his life,” she said. “I forgive him because it is what Christ did.”
President Trump, however, broke with her message of forgiveness, telling mourners he did not share Kirk’s view of wanting the best for political opponents.
“I hate my opponent and I don’t want the best for them,” he said, before again hailing Kirk as “our greatest evangelist for American liberty.”
The service drew a near-capacity crowd of almost 100,000, many wearing MAGA hats and red, white, and blue outfits.
Speakers pledged to carry on Kirk’s activism, with White House Deputy Chief of Staff Stephen Miller declaring: “The day that Charlie died, angels wept, but those tears have been turned into fire in our hearts.”
