By Zoila Palma: The White House confirmed that US companies will take control of TikTok’s algorithm and Americans will hold six of seven board seats for the app’s US operations under a pending agreement with Chinese parent company ByteDance.
Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said the deal could be finalized “in the coming days,” though Beijing has yet to publicly endorse the arrangement.
The move comes after years of pressure on ByteDance to divest TikTok’s US operations over national security concerns, BBC reports.
According to the White House, data storage and privacy for American users will be overseen by tech giant Oracle, chaired by Trump ally Larry Ellison, while control of the algorithm—a key sticking point in negotiations—will shift to US hands.
President Donald Trump said he secured approval for the deal in a phone call with Chinese President Xi Jinping, calling it a “productive” discussion, though China’s Commerce Ministry later issued a more cautious statement, saying talks should follow “market rules” and comply with Chinese law.
TikTok, which has 170 million US users, faced a ban earlier this year after the Supreme Court upheld legislation requiring ByteDance to sell its American operations or shut down.
Trump, who once pushed for an outright ban, has since embraced the platform as a political tool, particularly during his 2024 campaign.
If signed, the deal would place TikTok’s US operations under American investor control while giving Washington oversight of both the app’s powerful recommendation system and user data protections.
