By Zoila Palma: Taiwan’s Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, Chen Ming-chi, joined a reception in honor of Belize’s 44th Independence Day, underscoring the close friendship and expanding cooperation between the two nations.
Chen noted that since establishing diplomatic relations in 1989, Taiwan and Belize have worked hand in hand across multiple sectors, including infrastructure, healthcare, agriculture, education, technology, culture, environmental sustainability, and women’s empowerment. He highlighted frequent high-level exchanges as further proof of the partnership’s strength and diversity.
The Deputy Minister also announced that Taiwan began importing frozen Belizean whiteleg shrimp tax-free on July 30, a move expected to enhance bilateral trade and create economic benefits for both nations.
Chen expressed gratitude to Belize for its consistent support of Taiwan’s international participation in organizations such as the United Nations, the World Health Organization, and INTERPOL.
Belize’s Ambassador to Taiwan, Katherine Meighan, praised the cooperation in talent development, pointing to her own experience as a recipient of an International Cooperation and Development Fund scholarship. She emphasized that the Belize-Taiwan relationship is built on shared values, mutual respect, and people-to-people connections.
This year’s Independence Day theme, “Stronger Together, Rising Forever,” was also described as a reflection of the trajectory of Belize-Taiwan ties.
