By Breaking Belize News Staff (HP): The National Meteorological Service of Belize continues to monitor Tropical Storm Gabrielle, which is showing signs of strengthening as it moves westward in the Atlantic.
At 3:00 a.m. today, Gabrielle was located near latitude 24.3N, longitude 58.1W, or about 530 miles northeast of the northern Leeward Islands. The system is tracking west at just over 10 mph and has maximum sustained winds of 50 mph.
Meteorologists report that Gabrielle is becoming more organized as wind shear weakens, and the storm is forecast to reach hurricane strength by the end of the weekend. Models from the U.S. National Hurricane Center indicate Gabrielle could become a Category 2 hurricane by early next week.
Current track projections keep the system well to the east of the U.S. coastline and far from Belize. As of now, Gabrielle poses no threat to Belize.
Meanwhile, forecasters are also monitoring a tropical wave emerging off the coast of Africa that has a 20 percent chance of development over the next seven days.
Despite Gabrielle’s safe distance, Belizeans are advised to remain alert during the peak of the Atlantic hurricane season and continue following updates from the National Meteorological Service.
