By Zoila Palma: The National Hurricane Center (NHC) reports that Tropical Storm Gabrielle is expected to strengthen into a hurricane by Sunday as it continues to move across the Atlantic.
As of 11:00 a.m. AST (1500 UTC), the storm’s center was located near latitude 21.9 North, longitude 55.6 West, about 550 miles (885 km) east-northeast of the northern Leeward Islands.
Gabrielle is moving northwest at about 12 mph (19 km/h), with this motion expected to continue through Saturday.
Forecasters project a gradual turn toward the north-northwest by Saturday night, followed by a northward track by Sunday night. On its current path, the storm’s center is expected to pass east of Bermuda late Sunday into Monday.
Maximum sustained winds have reached near 50 mph (85 km/h), with higher gusts.
According to the NHC, gradual strengthening is anticipated, and Gabrielle is forecast to become a hurricane before the end of the weekend.
Tropical-storm-force winds currently extend outward up to 150 miles (240 km) from the center.
