International News: Study finds U.S. import dependence shifts toward EU, surpassing China

By Zoila Palma:  A new study by Germany’s IW economic institute shows that the United States now relies more on imports from the European Union than from China, both in total value and the number of goods.

Last year, over 3,100 product groups sourced at least half their imports from the EU, up from 2,600 in 2010. The total value reached $287 billion—nearly 2.5 times higher than 15 years ago.

By comparison, China supplied 2,925 product groups worth $247 billion, Reuters reported.

IW noted that U.S. reliance on China has declined as Washington pursues a “de-risking” strategy. The EU’s exports include key products such as chemicals, machinery, and electrical goods, which IW warned are difficult to replace in the short term.

The findings suggest Brussels holds leverage in trade talks with Washington.

“If they continue to raise tariffs, they will be shooting themselves in the foot,” said IW co-author Samina Sultan, hinting that the EU could restrict critical goods if tensions escalate.
