By Zoila Palma:  Meteorologists report that Tropical Storm Gabrielle has formed over the central tropical Atlantic and is expected to remain over open waters for several days.

As of 11:00 a.m. AST (3:00 p.m. UTC), the storm’s center was located near latitude 17.5 North, longitude 46.6 West—about 1,085 miles (1,745 km) east of the northern Leeward Islands.

Gabrielle is moving north-northwest at roughly 22 mph (35 km/h), with an erratic northwest to west-northwest track forecast over the tropical and subtropical central Atlantic in the coming days.

Satellite data indicate that Gabrielle has maximum sustained winds near 45 mph (75 km/h), with higher gusts.

Forecasters expect little change in strength over the next 48 hours, though gradual intensification is possible over the weekend.

The National Hurricane Center (NHC) continues to monitor Gabrielle closely, but at this time, it poses no direct threat to land.
