By Aaron Humes: Businessman Andrew Munnings exited the Belize City Magistrate’s Court just after 5:00 PM this evening, breathing a sigh of relief after receiving a second chance to satisfy his tax burden.

Following a night spent behind bars at the Belize Central Prison, Munnings was ordered by the court to pay an immediate sum of $2,000, with a commitment to settle half of his outstanding debt by October 16.

Munnings, who has accrued a total debt of $172,000 to the Belize Tax Service Department (BTSD), was accompanied by his attorney, Orson Elrington, who provided legal representation.

Efforts have been made to raise the funds owed as well as to challenge the status of his obligations to the BTSD. Both BTSD director Michelle Longsworth and Prime Minister and Minister of Finance John Briceño commented and we will have those reactions later on.
