By Zoila Palma: Police have identified the suspect in the fatal shooting of conservative activist Charlie Kirk as 22-year-old Tyler Robinson of Utah, Yahoo reports.
Robinson was taken into custody Thursday evening in St. George, about 260 miles from Utah Valley University in Orem, where the shooting occurred.
His family members reportedly turned him in to police after investigators released surveillance footage and still images of the suspect. A high-powered bolt-action rifle believed to be the murder weapon was recovered in a wooded area near the university.
Kirk, 31, was shot and killed Wednesday while addressing an audience of around 3,000 people at the university.
The FBI, which had offered a $100,000 reward for information, said the public played a crucial role in narrowing down leads after receiving more than 7,000 tips.
Investigators confirmed campus security footage showed Robinson arriving on campus in a gray Dodge Challenger shortly before the shooting, wearing clothing consistent with witness descriptions.
Utah Gov. Spencer Cox condemned the killing as a “political assassination,” saying the act was not only an attack on Kirk but on American democracy itself.
FBI Director Kash Patel praised the swift response by law enforcement, calling the 33-hour investigation a “historic” effort.
Kirk’s body has since been transported to Arizona, with funeral services expected next weekend.
President Donald Trump and Vice President JD Vance have both said they plan to attend.
