By Aaron Humes: A pair of Sergeants of Police are challenging false allegations that link them to a serious criminal incident, claiming these defamatory statements have significantly harmed their standing as law enforcement officers.
The controversy began following claims made by UDP Leader Moses “Shyne” Barrow, which were published online on September 5. He alleged that both officers were involved in the alleged abduction of Joseph Budna on August 22 and obstructed a uniformed police officer during the incident.
The officers firmly deny any wrongdoing and point out that they have never faced disciplinary action or criminal charges throughout their careers.
Represented by the legal firm Flores Piper LLP, the officers have taken formal steps against both Barrow and Channel 7 News, demanding a series of reparative actions. Their legal letters call for a public retraction and apology to be published twice in the same outlets as the original allegations, as well as a written commitment that the defamatory statements will not be repeated. Additionally, they are seeking $10,000 in damages each from Barrow and the station and its news director Jules Vasquez.
The law firm emphasized that the use of the term “allegedly” does not mitigate the serious implications of the claims made against the officers. The gravitas of the accusations threatens to irreparably damage the careers each officer has worked hard to build over the years.
Flores Piper LLP informed the parties involved that failure to meet their demands by the upcoming Friday, September 12, will result in legal action seeking up to $100,000 for the reputational harm inflicted upon the officers.
The letters also criticized the publication for not seeking comments from the accused officers before disseminating the allegations, raising important questions regarding journalistic integrity and responsibility.
An official investigation into the incident proceeds, with one officer, Barrington Flowers, already placed on interdiction, though he too has denied involvement.
