By Aaron Humes: The Government of Belize announced today the successful de-escalation of tensions at the Sarstoon River following the controversial placement of a Guatemalan flag on Sarstoon Island, an area within Belize’s territorial boundaries. The incident occurred on Wednesday, September 10, prompting swift action from Belize’s Ministries of Defence and Foreign Affairs.

High-level discussions between Belizean and Guatemalan officials quickly commenced after the flag was spotted, with Belize firmly condemning the illegal act and expressing serious concerns over the alleged involvement of Guatemalan Armed Forces (GAF) personnel in supporting this action. Guatemalan authorities confirmed that the flag has since been removed.

During the discussions, both nations reaffirmed their dedication to preventing future conflicts and addressing pertinent issues through dialogue and cooperation. This commitment builds on the framework established during a recent inter-ministerial meeting, which involved top officials from the Ministries of Foreign Affairs, Defence, and Home Affairs of both countries. The meeting concluded with an agreement to create a coordinating mechanism for managing operations in the Sarstoon area to minimize the risk of similar incidents.

The Belizean government is set to lodge a formal protest against what it terms a violation of its territorial sovereignty, along with the aggressive actions that accompanied the incident. Officials emphasized that Belize remains unwavering in its commitment to defend its territorial integrity and that any actions taken by its security forces will adhere to the principles of law and respect for the nation’s sovereignty.
