By Zoila Palma: Today, Americans gather to mark the 24th anniversary of the September 11, 2001, terror attacks with solemn ceremonies in New York, Virginia, and Pennsylvania.
Nearly 3,000 people were killed when hijacked planes struck the World Trade Center, the Pentagon, and a field near Shanksville, Pennsylvania.
At ground zero in Manhattan, family members held photos of lost loved ones as moments of silence were observed, followed by the reading of names.
At the Pentagon, President Donald Trump led a tribute to the 184 victims who died there, while Veterans Affairs Secretary Doug Collins joined a service in Shanksville honoring those aboard Flight 93.
The anniversary came under tightened security following the killing of conservative activist Charlie Kirk in Utah on Wednesday, which prompted Vice President JD Vance to cancel plans to attend the New York ceremony and instead meet with Kirk’s family.
Still, the central focus of the day remained on honoring victims and first responders.
Across the country, thousands of volunteers participated in food drives, blood donations, and community service as part of a national day of service in tribute to those lost.
More than two decades later, the legacy of the attacks continues to shape U.S. life and policy.
At the National September 11 Memorial and Museum, where waterfalls cascade into twin reflecting pools marking the footprints of the towers, Americans once again vowed never to forget.
