By Breaking Belize News Staff: More than a year after the fatal shooting of 52-year-old taxi driver Stephen Henry Jorgenson, police have formally charged his brother-in-law, 51-year-old Bernard Talbert, a businessman of Lords Bank, Ladyville, with murder.
Talbert was escorted to Court #2 around midday on Monday, where he was read a single count of murder. Due to the severity of the charge, no plea was taken, and he was remanded to the Belize Central Prison until December 10, 2025.
The charge stems from an incident on Sunday, March 3, 2024, at Jorgenson’s home on Rio Bravo Crescent in Belize City. According to police reports, Jorgenson was shot once during a family dispute allegedly involving a land issue. Witnesses, including Jorgenson’s common-law wife, identified Talbert as the shooter.
Jorgenson was found lying face up in a pool of blood inside the lower flat of his residence and was later pronounced dead at the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital. Crime scene technicians recovered a single 9mm expended shell casing and blood samples from the scene.
Investigators say Talbert fled Belize after the incident but was recently returned from the United States to face the murder charge.
