By Zoila Palma: U.S. President Donald Trump has signed an executive order granting tariff exemptions to certain countries with trade agreements with Washington, Reuters report.
The order, which takes effect Monday, applies to more than 45 categories of imports including metals such as nickel and gold, pharmaceutical compounds, and various chemicals.
The exemptions are designed to align U.S. tariffs with commitments already made under framework deals with allies like Japan and the European Union.
The move comes after months of sharp tariff hikes under Trump’s trade agenda, which he has described as a push to reduce U.S. trade deficits and secure better terms from foreign partners.
Under the new order, tariff cuts will apply to items that cannot be grown, mined, or sufficiently produced in the United States. They will also extend to some agricultural products, aircraft and parts, and non-patented pharmaceutical ingredients.
According to the White House, the exemptions will be managed by the U.S. Trade Representative, the Commerce Department, and customs officials for countries that strike reciprocal deals.
Products covered range from graphite and neodymium magnets, vital for batteries and electronics, to medical reagents and LED components.
However, the order also removes earlier exemptions on certain plastics and polysilicon.
