By Breaking Belize News Staff: Public outcry is growing across Belize as many citizens call for legal action against Dalia Vellos following the shooting death of her common-law husband, Wilson Hernandez, on Sunday morning.
Hernandez was fatally shot after an altercation involving Vellos.
While police have since charged Vellos’ niece, Christy Guzman, with manslaughter, Vellos herself has not been charged.
A video circulating on social media appears to show Christy handing a weapon to Vellos during the incident, raising further public concern about her involvement since Wilson was reportedly shot with her licensed weapon.
According to police, Vellos and Guzman claim that Hernandez assaulted them claiming that he was shot out of self defense.
Speculation is mounting that Vellos may be connected to a prominent business family in Belmopan and is allegedly being shielded from prosecution.
Critics argue that, since the weapon allegedly linked to Vellos was used in the fatal shooting, she could potentially face charges such as abetment to commit murder.
The case has also reignited public suspicion over a previous death involving the wife of a well-known Belmopan businessman.
Some Belizeans have also started questioning whether business ties and sponsorships to local police may be influencing the lack of charges against Vellos.
