By Aaron Humes: According to the Statistical Institute of Belize (SIB), consumer prices experienced an average increase of 0.6 percent from June to July 2025, with notable shifts in various sectors.
There was a sharp surge in the ‘Food and Non-Alcoholic Beverages’ category, which rose by 1.6 percent. Particularly striking was the rise in prices for fresh vegetables—lettuce, cabbage, tomatoes, cilantro, habanero peppers, and sweet peppers—registering an overall increase of 13.3 percent over the one month.
The transportation sector also reflected a 0.6 percent inflation rate, largely attributed to a marginal increase in the prices of regular gasoline.
Looking at year-to-date figures, the inflation rate for the first seven months of 2025 stands at 1.4 percent higher compared to the same period in 2024. This increase has been propelled by significant price hikes in essential categories, notably ‘Food and Non-Alcoholic Beverages’ and ‘Housing, Water, Electricity, Gas and Other Fuels,’ both recording a 2.4 percent rise. The ‘Personal Care, Social Protection and Miscellaneous Goods and Services’ category saw an even steeper increase of 3.2 percent due to higher costs for personal care products such as deodorants and lotions.
The highest price escalations were noted in bakery products, fresh fruits, and meats, along with beverages like fruit juices and purified water as well as higher rental costs and increased prices for liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) contributed to inflation in utilities.
While many sectors saw rising prices, some areas experienced declines. The ‘Transport’ category decreased by 1.4 percent, thanks to lower fuel prices, and the ‘Information and Communication’ category dipped by 1.7 percent, reflecting reduced prices for cellular phones and television sets.
