By Zoila Palma: Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro warned this week that he would “constitutionally declare a republic in arms” if U.S. President Donald Trump launches any military action against his country.
The threat comes as the United States significantly ramps up its military presence in the Caribbean, citing the need to combat Latin American drug cartels, The Telegraph reports.
Maduro characterized the U.S. buildup as a “criminal and bloody threat” and said his government has entered a state of “maximum preparedness” in response.
While Washington has not signaled any planned incursion, the deployment includes multiple U.S. Navy warships, including Aegis-guided missile destroyers and amphibious assault ships crewed by over 4,000 sailors and marines.
Venezuela, in turn, has reinforced its borders with Colombia and mobilized troops along its coast.
Maduro’s administration is also encouraging civilians to join militias.
Venezuela’s Foreign Minister Yvan Gil, citing a United Nations report, claimed that only a small fraction of cocaine passes through Venezuela and accused the U.S. of using a “false narrative” to justify military aggression.
Maduro remains defiant, insisting he won the country’s last presidential election — a claim rejected by much of the international community, including the United States.
He also confirmed ongoing communication with the Trump administration through diplomatic backchannels, including Trump’s envoy Richard Grenell.
Meanwhile, Maduro lashed out at U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio, calling him a “warlord” and accusing him of pushing for regime change through military pressure in the Caribbean.
